Here are five tips to help you improve your conversation skills:

Prepare ahead of time: If you’re nervous about starting a conversation, try preparing in advance. Mentally review what you want to discuss and even consider practicing with a friend.

Listen actively: When someone is speaking, give them your full attention. Don’t interrupt or talk over them. Instead, ask questions to clarify their points and show that you’re interested in what they have to say.

Stay positive: Stop worrying about making mistakes and have faith in your abilities. Worrying too much about what you will say next can cause you to lose track of the conversation as it’s happening. Instead, use active listening and stay focused on the other person and what they are saying.

Avoid conversation killers: There are a few things you should avoid unless you are very familiar with the person with whom you are speaking. These include controversial topics, negative comments, and personal attacks.

Ask open-ended questions: Instead of asking yes or no questions, ask open-ended questions that encourage the other person to share more about themselves. This will help you get to know them better and build a stronger relationship.
